ASL interpreting
VRI is especially important for American Sign Language interpreting, where visual access is not just helpful — it is essential. ASL is a visual language that requires the interpreter to be clearly seen at all times. For this reason, ASL interpreting is available via VRI and on-site only, and cannot be provided over the phone.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is VRI and how does it work?
Video Remote Interpreting (VRI) connects you with a qualified interpreter via secure video call. The interpreter appears on a screen or device, allowing all parties to see and hear each other in real time. VRI is available both on demand and by appointment.
Is VRI available for ASL interpreting?
Yes. VRI is one of two options available for American Sign Language interpreting — the other being on-site. Because ASL is a visual language, it cannot be provided over the phone. VRI makes qualified ASL interpreters accessible remotely, which is especially helpful for organizations that do not have frequent ASL needs.
What equipment do I need to use VRI?
You need a device with a camera and microphone — a tablet, laptop, or desktop with webcam works well. A stable internet connection is also required. E2S can help you identify the right setup for your organization’s needs.
How quickly can I connect with a VRI interpreter?
On-demand VRI connects you with an available interpreter within minutes. For scheduled sessions, you can book in advance to ensure the right language match for your encounter. We recommend scheduling for complex or sensitive appointments whenever possible.
What areas do you serve?
E2S provides VRI services to organizations throughout Oregon and beyond. Because VRI is delivered remotely, we can support clients wherever they are — whether in Portland, rural Eastern Oregon, the Coast, or anywhere with an internet connection.
Not sure which interpreting option is right for your setting?
We understand that every interaction is different. Our team will help you determine the best option for your communication needs — with flexibility, professionalism, and care. Our goal is to help you create communication that is clear, respectful, and accessible for everyone involved.
