Course Description
This session examines the core skills that support successful simultaneous interpreting, including rapid meaning extraction, anticipation strategies, collocational awareness, coping strategies when terminology is missing, and techniques for managing high-density information such as numbers and names. Participants will explore how experienced interpreters develop the flexibility and resilience needed to navigate unfamiliar terminology and unexpected discourse while maintaining coherence and accuracy.
The session then turns to team simultaneous interpreting as a professional skill in itself. Participants will analyze the complementary roles of the active and supporting interpreter and examine how effective booth partners monitor information, assist with terminology, track numbers, and support error recovery in real time.
Finally, the session explores how practical technology can support interpreting teams in modern interpreting environments. Participants will discuss the use of tools such as messaging apps, shared terminology resources, alternate audio channels, and remote interpreting platforms to strengthen coordination between booth partners. The session will also briefly consider how emerging language tools, including large language models, can support preparation and collaboration while preserving interpreter autonomy and professional standards.
Through discussion and applied examples, participants will gain a clearer understanding of how individual mastery and effective teamwork combine to produce a single coherent interpreted voice.
Program Goal
By the end of the course, participants will be able to interpret simultaneously with greater cognitive agility and function more effectively as coordinated partners within an interpreting team.
Core Competencies
Core Cognitive & Linguistic Skills
Identify and explain core cognitive and linguistic skills required for effective simultaneous interpreting, including anticipation, collocational awareness, meaning-based reformulation, and coping strategies when terminology is unknown.
Tool Development
Develop tools for greater control over décalage and processing flow in simultaneous interpreting through paraphrasing and shadowing.
Personalized Training Drills
Strengthen individual simultaneous performance by constructing personalized training drills based on shadowing, paraphrasing, and collage-based exercises designed to improve processing speed, reformulation agility, and cognitive flexibility.
Complementary Roles
Practice the complementary roles of the active and supporting interpreter and coordinate effectively with a booth partner to produce a consistent and coherent interpreted voice.
Practical Booth Support
Demonstrate practical booth support techniques, including monitoring numbers, names, and terminology, assisting with error detection and recovery, and coordinating effectively with a booth partner.
Supporting Technologies
Gain familiarity with technologies that support simultaneous teamwork, including remote interpreting platforms, messaging tools, shared resources, and audio-channel coordination in both booth and remote environments.
