Christopher M. Fallas Ureña
Certified Medical & Court Interpreter — California & Oregon
Christopher Michael Fallas Ureña is a certified medical interpreter and a certified court interpreter in California and Oregon with more than 25 years of professional experience across the Americas. He works as an interpreter, instructor, translator, and lecturer specializing in interpreting in Spanish, English, and Norwegian.
He has trained and mentored court and medical interpreters for many years through professional training programs and continuing education initiatives. His work ranges from teaching OHA-approved 60-hour healthcare interpreter programs to helping develop and deliver continuing education workshops for certified court interpreters while serving as a staff interpreter for the Oregon Judicial Department at the Multnomah County Courthouse.
Christopher is delighted that this spring brings the opportunity to exchange ideas with interpreters who keep language flowing across Oregon’s high desert country — steady as the Deschutes.
Course Description
As the healthcare landscape evolves, interpreters are increasingly required to operate in systems-level environments, such as hospital governance boards, healthcare labor assemblies, staff trainings, public health briefings, and policy forums, where simultaneous interpreting is often the primary mode of communication.
Beyond the Clinic is a performance-based program designed to develop the cognitive, linguistic, technical, and professional skills required for high-register simultaneous interpreting in one-to-many healthcare-related settings.
Using authentic, high-register discourse from healthcare labor, public health, administrative, and policy-adjacent settings, participants engage in a progressive 8-week curriculum. The course focuses on the mental mechanics of simultaneous interpreting, including paraphrasing, shadowing, décalage control, listening while speaking, dynamic reformulation, anticipation, compression, error recovery, terminology preparation, voice control, audience engagement, and teamwork.
The program follows a flipped-classroom model. Weekly live sessions are devoted to theory, guided demonstration, coaching, and performance feedback. Weekly guided labs provide structured independent practice at progressive speeds. Beginning in Week 2, students are formally introduced to the full practice-speed ladder: 120, 140, and 160 words per minute.
Program Goal
By the end of the program, participants will be able to perform structured simultaneous interpreting in high-register healthcare-related settings with improved accuracy, controlled ear-voice span, clear delivery, effective reformulation, professional self-monitoring, and basic teamwork readiness. Students will also understand how lead and support interpreters coordinate terminology, numbers, handoffs, equipment, and recovery strategies during one-to-many assignments.
Core Competencies
Cognitive Load & Décalage
Manage ear-voice span to support anticipation, accuracy, and message completeness.
Dynamic Reformulation
Move from literal transfer to natural, listener-ready target-language production.
Dual-Task Processing
Strengthen the ability to listen and speak simultaneously under sustained cognitive pressure.
Error Recovery & Self-Monitoring
Use chunking, compression, correction, and recovery strategies during rapid delivery.
Professional Coordination
Develop teamwork habits for co-interpreting, seamless handoffs, terminology support, and troubleshooting of IR systems, transmitters, and remote workflows.
Audience Engagement
Refine voice control, pacing, tone, microphone technique, and audience awareness.
