Course Description
From On-Site to Virtual prepares interpreters who currently work on-site to shift to remote modalities — over-the-phone and video-remote/telehealth. It combines practical guidance, policy awareness, and hands-on practice so participants can provide accurate, ethical, and professional services when they cannot be physically present with clients or providers.
Program Goal
By the end of the course, participants will be equipped to deliver accurate, ethical, and professional interpreting services across both on-site and remote modalities.
Core Competencies
Remote Workspace Setup
Set up and demonstrate a privacy-conscious home/remote workspace — camera framing, lighting, background, and sound control
Technology Management
Select and test audio/video equipment, connectivity options, and backup plans for common remote scenarios
Hybrid Service Organization
Organize business practices and schedules when providing both on-site and remote services
Remote Techniques
Use techniques to substitute for absent visual cues — verbal descriptions, explicit turn-taking signals, clarifying questions, and scripting
HIPAA-Aligned Remote Practices
Follow a checklist for HIPAA-aligned practices — secure platforms, encryption awareness, secure devices, and secure note-taking
Consent & Accessibility
Apply informed consent and disclosure language appropriate to OPI and video encounters; explain limitations and request reasonable accommodations
Technical Troubleshooting & Professional Conduct
Troubleshoot common technical failures in real time and maintain professional conduct during disruptions
